To some of the community in lockdown it might seem that the Friends of Harrow Weald Recreation Ground have become very quiet and that all activity has ceased. But behind the scenes this is far from the truth.
NEWS FROM LOCKDOWN
Though the many events that were planned for each month this year have had to be put on hold, the Friends are very active in the background and determined that once the threat of Covid-19 has passed, we will be back hosting and reorganising some exciting days.
In addition the Friends have hosted online remote competitions and get togethers, including bi-weekly quiz nights with a social distanced community meal and bingo. There will be more to follow, so if you have an idea for a suitable event that can be held remotely online, please let us know.
Work began again on the stage project which is now nearly completed and music events, featuring our great local musicians and singers, will actually take place there. The large cinema screen will come to life again for evening entertainment. (Thats a big yippee from us all!)

Sunday litter picking is back with strong social distance rules (more details here)
Great favourites, like our Old Time Music Hall and Murder Mystery evenings, will continue and once again we will be searching for the wildlife in the park. In the meantime the Friends are still working very hard maintaining and updating our local residents and members providing things to do and join in with.
So far we have featured competitions including growing vegetables from seeds (which were kindly donated by Franchi seeds), painting a plaster ornament, and growing edible flowers.
The results, so far, and the opportunity to cast a vote for your favourites, are featured in the competition section of the website. These uploaded images are definitely fun, inventive and great to see. Our thanks go out to everyone who has taken part. Although, at present, due to delivery considerations, the entries to competitions are restricted to the areas immediately around the park, we look forward to, once again, being able to extend our competitions and events to the whole community. But, open to anyone, is the opportunity to add your picture taken in a park in the Harrow area.

Graham Henson: Leader Harrow council
Chose the first prize
Taking several small breaks from being the leader of Harrow council Graham was so impressed by all the different great entries we decided to choose two first prizes.
The overall outcome from this competition has shown how many talented people there are in Harrow.
Cheryl Gould MRSS President Harrow art society
Chose the second prize
Well that was a hard thing to do because all the entries did very well considering so many different levels of age and ability it made it very hard to choose a winner; so as I have been invited to select a second prizewinner here is my decision :-My choice for 2nd prize for ceramics is SEASIDE COTTAGE because the inventive addition of broken seashells has totally transformed the original flat ceramic door to look like a textured 3D wall of a cottage with a window but still retains the features of a door with hinges and a handle which makes it all a bit surreal -I would like to know who created it?
Could I mention that I really enjoyed the exhibition and I would like to give the following a mention.Evelyn’s BUTTERFLY -Such fabulous zingy coloursVal H ’s BUTTERFLY - Beautifully obsserved-obviously she chose a specific butterfly to recreateJasmine’s TURTLE —buttons were a good idea to emphasise the turtle shell .Annie S -TEDDY BEAR - like it because it is so Pop Art with contemporary bold coloursNot Me Cat ?? And Finn’s little HORSE —very sweet
LITTER UPDATE (I'M ALL RIGHT JACK) - STAY SAFE - SOCIAL DISTANCING
While the park has remained quite tidy during the lockdown period, litter has been building up and there have been occasional incidents of groups gathering and leaving their litter behind. Fortunately our dog walking Friends have regularly been picking litter up, while taking their daily exercise. Now that the Covid-19 regulations have eased a little, and with the opening of some local fast food outlets, our regular litter picking sessions have now returned, in a slightly different form, taking social distancing into account.
Of course, our vigilant Friends have continued to lock and unlock gates, as required.
So, you see, we are still here and ready to get back in full swing when the time is right! In the meantime, a big thank you to all of the community who are enjoying our local park safely.
We must continue to follow the restrictions imposed on us all, to keep everyone as safe as possible, and to help move on to the time when we can enjoy having more freedom again. Until then, stay safe and well and respect the safety of those around you.
KFC -Whats next
We would like to thank our Community Action Committee for the work they have undertaken regarding the litter.
After many years, we have recently established a written agreement with an international company, with a local outlet, to tidy up the litter, left by their customers, around the area.
Now we are hopeful that the company will honour their commitment to keeping our area free of litter resulting from their business. Watch this space!
We would also appeal to their customers and all park users to put their litter in the bins on the street or in the park, or if the bins are full, please take your litter home with you. This small act from each person will improve our area so much.
However, they were not prepared to agree to this arrangement being implemented nationwide, or even throughout the borough.
But at least the Friends have achieved this local solution, and, as we are Friends, we feel it is only right to help others to benefit from the same level of litter picking.
LITTER IS A PROBLEM FOR US ALL
We would also appeal to their customers and all park users to put their litter in the bins on the street or in the park, or if the bins are full, please take your litter home with you.
This small act from each person will improve your area so much.
Do you have pictures of any takeaway litter piles anywhere in the UK? We are especially interested in KFC at this stage. please send them to us

Local - Home based: This group cover lots of different subject that together we can improve by communication and facts.
Our goal is to help community groups and businesses work together locally.
Our second goal is to spread awareness through information and communication! This way we believe that most issues can be resolved.
This is an early stage open and free community project
You can play an essential role in helping us and the community to achieve these important goals. If you care about the local environment and want to help The Friends to set up and expand this library resource, please join our team.
We need people willing to research and collate information from surrounding boroughs. This data will then be added to our library, which will be accessible to all similar groups, to ensure that this information, and the solutions to problems that might be encountered, will be consistently available to everyone.
Volunteers are also needed to input data online, to add information about community groups and open spaces to our growing list. This will allow us all to communicate and share information in the future.
This project is a developing and worthwhile venture, which you can join. You can help develop a better and happier community environment for the benefit of us all and for future generations.

FINDING NEW WAYS TO RAISE MONEY AS A CHARITY!
Online Community shop
We have recently opened an online shop, which, as a percentage of the income is donated to The Friends charity, will help us to generate the income needed to achieve our community goals,.
Our shop is now featuring a number of rare and regular iconic Rimowa brand suitcases with a 30% reduction on the price. As any internet site will show, this is an unbeatable price offer, so don’t miss out, as these items are limited, and once they are gone they are gone!
Rimowa is recognised as one of the best luggage brands in the world. So, while your travel plans may be disrupted at the moment, don’t miss this opportunity to plan ahead and dream of future holidays, accompanied by a stylish suitcase or two.
Face Masks are, of course, very much in demand now. So, we are pleased to say that we have been working with a company that imports these masks from Italy and we have been able to agree massively reduced prices for pre-ordering. The masks are reusable, washable and breathable and we expect them to hit the market in the next week or two.
