Volunteers are always very welcome to join us.
We are always keen to hear your ideas about what will make the area better for you, and how you feel about the facilities provided. There is no commitment to join us every week, any time that you can give will be really valuable. It’s a good way to start the day, and knowing that you are doing something to help the local community and to improve our environment definitely brings great benefits. That’s not to mention the offer of a cup of tea and biscuits along the way!
After a long time without it, some of our group bought a new net for the basketball hoop and installed it during one of our Sunday ventures. This was well received and was done purely to enhance the park for the people who enjoy spending time there. So much good spirit and kindness can be generated by the community working together.
During July the Friends have supported a local sports day for 350 children from Weald Rise Primary School and have hosted a Fun Day for a lovely group of people from Harrow Mencap, with games and excellent hot food, which was donated by the Shree Jalaram Mandir and Community Centre, Greenford. Both events went very well and it was hard to be sure who, from the visiting groups or the Friends, enjoyed themselves most. We can certainly say that we will be very happy to host both groups again.
We look forward to a great attendance this weekend (Sunday 18th August from 8.15pm) at our free Cinema in the Park event and the debut of our large screen. Grease, featuring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John is the chosen film for the evening. All welcome to join us.
WEATHER NOTICE: CINEMA UPDATE
WE ARE EXPECTING TO GO AHEAD WITH GREASE
If you would like to feature the screen at your own event, please contact us for more information about hire.
Sunday 1st September: Health Day. Noon to 5.00pm FREE ENTRY
Spend some time in the park and, as well as enjoying the fun of being outdoors, take the opportunity to learn more about your health and to understand the things that may help you. Pilates, Tai Chi, yoga, and spin cycling/ladies keep fit will be featured. For those that are looking for relaxation, find out about the power of crystals, aromatherapy, Reiki massage and Chakra healing, or enjoy a hand, head or foot massage from the practitioners on site. Join in and try some of the exercise on offer, or enjoy a walk in the park, explore the many stalls and relax. There will also be the opportunity to find out about your own health from the paramedics in the park, who can offer pulse, oxygen levels, blood sugar, temperature, blood pressure checks and ECGs.
Learn all about bees, and how you can help them survive, from the Harrow beekeepers. Locally produced honey and other products will be available to buy.
Watch demonstrations of different exercise techniques, to find the one that might suit you and, if you're worried about your weight, Weight Watchers will be glad to offer their help. Buy some healthy food at the stall sponsored by Waitrose, bring a picnic, or enjoy other food on offer from our stall.
Fun events for children are also planned, including storytelling by Claudia Mernick, and a cycling workshop and fun skills for children. Bring your child’s own bicycle.
There will also be a raffle with the chance to win a prize.
Every Wednesday: Tai Chi 10.00am FREE
This group is run by Zhijun Wang, and includes a friendly walk to the park from the corner of Enderley Road HA3 5HF, followed by a 30 minute session of Tai Chi. Anyone who prefers to make their own way to the park for the Tai Chi session, rather than joining the group walk, is welcome to do so. The group is well attended, rain or shine, and has just celebrated its second anniversary. New members are very welcome. The regular weekly sessions will be continuing throughout the year.
Monday 2nd September: The Friends of the Park Meeting at 7.00pm in the Memorial Hall
All are welcome to come along to add their ideas, listen to the progress that is being made and express any concerns. At the same time you can enjoy a drink from the bar.

CAN YOU HELP?
Promotion of the events organised by the Friends of Harrow Weald Recreation Ground is helped by the display of posters that we produce. Although we have a number of regular locations for the posters, we would really like to hear from anyone who can offer a suitable additional space to site them. If you know of a venue or location that could help with this, we would love to hear from you.
We are in need of an experienced gardening company to help create the new landscaped areas and pergola for the park. If you can help with recommendations or are a company happy to discuss this with us, please contact us.
We are still looking for additional volunteers to lock and unlock some of the gates to the park. This would be particularly helpful when the existing volunteers are away, or are unable to fulfil this daily task. Gate management is really important in keeping the park safe and tidy and any help that you can give would be very much appreciated and is a big factor in improving our area. The locking of the additional gates in the evening has already reduced littering and anti-social behaviour.
If you would like to set up a stall at any of our events, please contact us. No charge will be made to registered charities, but a donation from profits made is requested from all other stallholders. You are welcome to bring your own table, or tables can be rented by advance arrangement, at a cost of £5.00 per table per day. Priority is given to local stall holders.
