We wish a very happy and inspirational new year to all and look forward to hosting more events for everyone in 2020. If you have any suggestions to make, or wish to provide any information or help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

WHO ARE THE FRIENDS?

The Friends of Harrow Weald believe parks make the very best Community Centres. We were originally formed from a group of local residents that wanted to take responsibility for and transformed the local park and area.

WHAT WE DO

Creating a unique opportunity for parks to become a vibrant self-funding community space, with wellbeing for people and nature, education and financial sustainability running through everything.

TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

This year we will see the expansion of the orchard, planting of the living wall and sensory garden, the installation of a stage area and many events planned for the coming months.

But, we’re still buzzing from the great success of our Old Time Music Hall event in December, when the great Players Theatre entertained us with their wonderful vocals and acting skills, duped us with some excellent close up magic and hosted a great singalong.

The added bonus to the evening was an appearance by the renowned comedian and scriptwriter, Barry Cryer, who lead everyone in a sing song to “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”, which had us bobbing up and down on cue, as well as providing a joke or two and drawing the raffle prizes for us.

A TREMENDOUS 2019!

Our monthly meeting gave us time to reflect on what the past year has brought. In number terms some items were quite overwhelming, as was the support that we have received from volunteers, local businesses, the council and media, and, of course, the community who have helped make our events successful.

Throughout the past year 27 events have taken place, including quiz nights, a barn dance, cinema in the park, health, art and music events, bat walks and a murder mystery night. Volunteers have unlocked or locked the park gates 3,650 times, held almost 70 meetings and monitored hundreds of telephone calls. In addition there have been more than 52 Sunday litter picks, as well hundreds of days spent litter picking during the week. Tai Chi has continued throughout the year, and will continue in 2020.

The last event in a busy year was a welcome get together in the park for carols by candlelight. This proved to be a magical evening, with community members of all ages joining together to sing well known carols, to the accompaniment of Ian Byrne of Semafour on keyboard.

CAN YOU HELP?

Can you help display our posters to promote upcoming events? Please let us know if you can offer a suitable additional site where they can be displayed.

We are in need of an experienced gardening company to help create the new landscaped areas and pergola for the park. If you can help with recommendations, or are a company happy to discuss this with us, please get in touch.

Additional volunteers to lock and unlock some of the gates to the park are always needed. This is particularly helpful when the existing volunteers are away, or are unable to fulfil this daily task. Keeping the gates locked helps to reduced littering and anti-social behaviour and to make the park a better place for the community.
