With the darker evenings here to stay for some months, the setting was ideal for the Bat Watch that took place in the park in October.
Young and old alike enjoyed searching for, and finding, the bats that inhabit out park. During the same month, our sold out Halloween Murder Mystery “Carnival Killer” had us all searching for a very different character – in some cases successfully! But, whether the killer was identified, or not, everyone enjoyed the brilliant presentation by Moneypenny Productions. The buffet was excellent and the photographs featured on The Friends’ website will highlight the fun costumes that many people wore.
The latest quiz night in October was hosted very successfully by our new quizmaster, Terry, and was held in the Maricas Avenue Brownies’ HQ. The night was enjoyed by all and, following the continuing success of these quiz nights, another is planned for January 2020. Full details will be announced as soon as possible.
Our Sunday morning litter picks and general tidying sessions are continuing from 10.00am. All are welcome. Many new shrubs and plants have been put in place along the High Road and around the Lych Gate area, and the group of unemployed people, who frequently use the park, have worked hard to clear the overgrown shrubs and to burn the excess cuttings. They are also helping with planting work. The Mitzvah Day on 17th November had a good attendance and work continued then with the planting of more bulbs and preparation for the setting up of the orchard area. The Brownies came along to assist and everyone worked well together on this interfaith day of social action.
The Friends of Harrow Weald Recreation Ground is now registered with Amazon which will give many benefits to the group and help us to achieve our aims for the community and the park. If you are making any purchases through Amazon you can now register with smile.amazon.co.uk and select our group as your chosen charity. Each time a purchase is made Amazon will donate small percentage of the purchase price to the group, without any additional cost being charged to the shopper. This is only possible through the Smile site where eligible purchases will be highlighted. In all other ways the site is the same as the main Amazon site.
This event is being held at the Memorial Hall and will feature the great entertainment provided by the wonderful London based Players’ Theatre. Traditional Victorian musical hall songs will feature, with a singalong and a great hot food Christmas buffet. There will be a prize for the best old fashioned hat, such as a bonnet or top hat. Feel free to dress in Victorian style costume if you wish. Tickets are in great demand, so contact Lorna now if you wish to join in the fun. Tickets are £25 per person, including food.
Please note that this meeting is being held on a Tuesday, not on a Monday. All are welcome to come along to add their ideas, follow our progress on projects, highlight any concerns and meet members of the community. Drinks are available from the bar.
Join us inside the park near the bus station, at 4.00pm for a community carol singing event, with keyboard accompaniment. A school choir will also be joining us. Mince pies, soft drinks and mulled wine will be served.
This group is run by Zhijun Wang, and includes a friendly walk from Enderley Road HA3 5HF, followed by a 30 minute session of Tai Chi. During the winter months, depending on the weather, the group will undertake the Tai Chi session in the park or in the nearby Brownies’ HQ in Maricas Avenue (opposite the entrance to Weighton Road). New members are very welcome.

CAN YOU HELP?
Can you help display our posters to promote upcoming events? Please let us know if you can offer a suitable additional site where they can be displayed.
We are in need of an experienced gardening company to help create the new landscaped areas and pergola for the park. If you can help with recommendations, or are a company happy to discuss this with us, please get in touch.
Additional volunteers to lock and unlock some of the gates to the park are always needed. This is particularly helpful when the existing volunteers are away, or are unable to fulfil this daily task. Keeping the gates locked helps to reduced littering and anti-social behaviour and to make the park a better place for the community.
If you would like to set up a stall at any of our events, please contact us. No charge is made to registered charities, but a donation from profits made at the event is requested from all other stallholders. You are welcome to bring your own table, or tables can be rented by advance arrangement, at a cost of £5.00 per table per day. Priority is given to local stall holders.
