ParkLife News Dec 2021.   The countdown to Christmas has truly begun.

‍Welcome to our very brief overview of 2021 and plans for the coming year. The Game! ‍

Understanding what we do and who we are!

The Friends of Harrow Weald started as a small group of residents litter picking in our local park, whipped into action through amazing enthusiasm for what is right.

Quickly more people started to get involved and truly amazing things were happening.  Nature in our park felt better, strangers started speaking to each other, and together the local community started to create!

Once our local park was lovingly restored and cleaned, we began to see improvements beyond the park gates.  This resulted in local events being organised, quality long term relationships forming with other local community groups, and plans being created on how we would like to see the future.

‍Event:  SUNDAY 19th Dec 4.30pm

Carol Banner1

We are delighted to announce that on Sunday 19th December at 4.30pm,Rock Chorus will be joining us, on the Parklife Café cosy stage, for a wonderful time of singing and celebration.

The locally based group, formed by acclaimed singer/songwriter Lauren Field, will be performing some Christmas favourites including ‘Fairytale of New York’, ‘Happy Christmas War is Over’, ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’, ‘I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day’ and more.  We really believe that this event is something not to be missed, so come along, singalong, or just enjoy listening.

To add to the Christmas mood there will be a number of Christmas stalls to browse and mulled wine and mince pies to enjoy.

We look forward to seeing you there! ‍ ‍ ‍

Moving into 2022

2021 saw two major obstacles being overcome, leaving us able to develop on these building blocks for the future.

Metroline PLC have provided us with a strip of land, making a commitment to work with us along our boundary wall.  The Metroline strip of land will be covered over, to provide a sheltered area, where we aim  to install work benches.  This will provide opportunities, including setting up creative work areas for all to enjoy.

ParkLife café is a community café/space which is used to fund our ambition of turning our park into a community centre for all.

Although the actual process of getting the cafe open was fraught with problems, it is true that  problems are always halved when shared.   Seeing the commitment from the many people who worked  together to achieve the opening of our very special café is quite humbling.

Since the cafe opened, many kind and interesting people have popped in, the volunteer roster is growing, and a fun and positive energy is always in the air.

ParkLife Café is now open!

The final menu is yet to be finalised, but the café is already offering a good variety of hot and cold food and drinks.

Volunteers @ ParkLife Cafe:

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make our dream of opening the ParkLife community café a reality, and a further thank you to the volunteers who are helping to keep the cafe running.   If you are interested in volunteering to help us in the ParkLife Café, we would love to hear from you.

‍      Metroline strip of land

We are now planning and preparing for the full development of the Metroline living wall.

The Friends have many other surprises and projects in store.   We aim to fully implement our ongoing recycling programme and to work towards providing and funding the availability of vitally needed free drinking water, particularly for children playing in the park during the summer.

Could your business get involved?

Creating tomorrow's parks today!  "If we don't do it who will?"

We have many different out of the box thinking opportunities

Recycling:  The Friend’s style

Over the past few months, The Friends have been working towards an interesting and fun recycling programme, including projects such as taking part in the setting up of litter picking hubs around Harrow. Once our recycling program is implemented, transparency will reveal some interesting results, incorporating many of the simple everyday things often missed; playing with the big world on a small micro basis, and making a difference.

The Gardening club

‍With Spring in mind, we are now getting ready to create our gardening club.  Once the cover is in place over the Metroline strip of land, we will begin building the gardening club and a learning centre. We are looking for people who can help with these projects, so please get in touch if you would like to know more.

March and beyond 2022

The weather will be great, community events, nature and humans will enjoy a clean and thriving park. Late-night sourdough pizzas and beyond belief burgers, from the cafe, will be eaten accompanied by a bottle of red wine, while seated on the cosy stage, listening to bands playing on the main stage.  Then we will all wonder why it took so long to organise such a great and positive community spirit and why did it take such a lot of effort to get here!? The Game!?

‍Litter picking equipment

If you need any spare litter bags, hoops or litter pickers we now have them in stock.  Available at  the ParkLife cafe and park groups around Harrow.  ‍

‍Thank you - 2021

It would be impossible to put into words how many nice things have been going on in Harrow Weald Recreation ground.

It's like a gift of happiness that keeps on giving.

So many people have come together during this past year, each adding their own special and individual input to what we do as a community.

And so as 2021 draws to an end  our special award goes to everyone who has been involved with the Friends in the past year.  We look forward to a healthy and prosperous year creating together in 2022.

We wish you well and hope you have a wonderful day!
