Park becomes stronger when residents, local community groups, and businesses come together!

friendsnln0The Friends of Harrow Weald believe parks make the very best community centres, and offer a unique opportunity to create tomorrow's parks today using a convergence of nature, technology, recycling, education and wellbeing for humans and bugs alike. To help and for fun we have a gigabit connection being installed.

JULY 2021 PARKLIFE NEWS

PARKLIFEThe local community have been making the most of our lovely outdoor park space to enjoy picnics, take exercise, hold family gatherings, play football, fly a kite and walk children and dogs.

The volunteer Friends of the Park group have been continuing to pick up litter, lock gates and work towards hosting many events for the rest of the year. The aim is to maintain our park as a welcoming and enjoyable place to be. We hope that the community agree with us and can see many changes for the better. (Volunteer and get involved)

Overall we believe we have made a difference to our community, by helping others, joining the community together and maintaining the park. Our park is a place where users should be able to enjoy the space and freedom it can provide. But we can only maintain this with the support of local businesses, residents and general goodwill. You can help us by donating your time, offering your support, or, as a business, sponsor an event or project.

We love to spread good news, so we would love to hear your good news stories about your local park. We can all celebrate the great work park groups and volunteers carry out in our local areas.

WATER IS THE SOURCE OF LIFE FOR BUGS AND HUMANS ALIKE.

WATER - 1 - PARKLIFE CAFE - (NOT YET OPEN WAITING FOR WATER)

plcOne of the major and exciting changes, now almost completed, is the new community café, which is located at the park entrance next to Harrow Weald bus garage. The Friends received a great deal of support to assist us in making the café a reality, and we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped us to achieve this goal. We are looking forward to the official handover taking place soon.

The name for the café was chosen from over forty potential ideas suggested by local people. Following voting, the outright favourite, and now the name of the new community space, is ParkLife Café. The café will be surrounded by colourful hanging baskets, that have been sponsored and nurtured by local volunteers. Our friends at the Royal Horticultural Society have advised us on the best plants and flowers to place around the café, for the benefit of nature and the wellbeing of the café and park users. We look forward to hosting our bingo, whist and group meetings there, as well as catering for the local community.

We now have the use of two containers in the park, located close to the café. These will soon be transformed into a garden centre, book club and storage space. The containers will be brightened up by coverings of seasonal flowers and will become a part of the Friends café corner.

WATER - 2 - PARKLIFE CAFE -

THE WATER FOUNTAIN AND FREE WATER FOR ALL PARK USERS (NOT YET AVAILABLE  WAITING FOR WATER)

fountain free drinking water for allThis project is needed: Children are playing, adults are chilling, we are surrounded by shops, yet the most important element we need is not available unless you pay, which is unreasonable.

The friends believe drinking water should be freely available for everyone.

we are seeking funding through a combination of grants and donations, can you help? Maybe you are able to write grant applications, or perhaps you have a fountain you can donate?

WATER - 3 - METROLINE LIVING WALL - (NOT YET STARTED WAITING FOR CAFE WATER)

METROLINE living wallThe Metroline living wall is a unique convergence of nature, technology, recycling, education and wellbeing for humans and bugs alike. Once complete, it will transform a section of the park into a beautiful and natural growing wall.

This project will see 1000 litres of water recycled for community use.

This area will also be uplifted by the project that we are working on with Metroline and Harrow Council, to create a space especially designed for the needs of the community, taking into account supporting adults and children with special needs such as dementia, ADHD, and inclusion issues, as well as for carers. At the same time, we aim to promote recycling, consider future energy needs and environmental impact, with business and the community working together.

EVENTS - ON THE STAGE - COMMUNITY EVENTS .............

Music on the stage

We’re delighted also to announce the first outdoor event for some time that will be taking place on the Stage, close to the Lych Gate. On Friday 23rd July from 7pm one of our favourite local groups DNR will be rocking the park with great live music. As if that wasn’t enough, we have a true Liverpool group, The Liverpool Echoes, appearing the following week on Friday 30th July from 7pm. They will be presenting some of the great sounds that came out of Liverpool from the Sixties onwards, offering something for everyone. DJ Donald will be providing support at both of these FREE events. Further monthly Friday night music events are already booked and full details are given in the events section here.

Our last barn dance was well attended and we couldn’t resist planning another, which will take place on Sunday 25th July at 7pm in the garden of the Brownie Hut in Maricas Avenue.

Get ready to swing your partner round and join in the fun. For something less active, join us for bingo with tea and cake in the Memorial Hall at 2pm on Thursday 22nd July, or take a gentle walk with Simon Braidman on Saturday 31st July at 3pm and learn about flowers and bees.

Harrow Weald Festival

You can also find details here of our first Harrow Weald Festival taking place on SATURDAY 21st AUGUST from midday to 10.00pm. This busy festival features many of the events and stalls that our community loved, (before the pandemic changed our lives), all combined in one great day! For music lovers we have bands and performers on the stage throughout the afternoon and evening, alongside Donald the DJ.

In the arena there will be a dog show, as well as displays of sports, healthy exercise, flag displays and painting, with opportunities to watch and take part. There will be a great variety of stalls, offering tombola and raffles, items such as plants and books to buy, as well as ice cream and a variety of food. A car boot sale will be situated on the large playing field.

Don’t miss the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and Disney Film Show. Follow our events page for full details and updates. We look forward to seeing you on the day.

RECYCLING

Recycling - Rejected LTN's

Park users may have wondered why nine very large wooden boxes have materialised in the park. These large planters were used for the Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes, that have now been discontinued, and have been acquired by the Friends. These will soon be transformed into a fun community resource – watch this website for more details.

Recycling competition

Are you concerned about the number of items that you see thrown away?

Some example ideas

Our competition could provide a great opportunity for you to show how you can make a difference.

Why not reuse some empty containers that would otherwise end up in a bin, or create something from cardboard, or other items, that you could give a new life to?

Perhaps your idea could benefit nature, or provide fun for others by creating a toy or a game, or an indoor or outdoor artwork.

The key is that all items used must be recycled, reused or repurposed

Let your imagination take over and you might be the lucky winner of a gift card from TK Maxx.

LITTER PICKING HUB

Litter22The Friends have also been working with Harrow council to create a litter picking hub, to empower anyone who wants to combat littering in and around the area. You can order equipment online and collect it from several locations around Harrow.

If you have set up a litter picking group, or run local litter picking events in the Harrow area, we would love to add these dates to our events calendar, so that community members can join you. CLICK HERE

WANTED

Volunteers wanted to help at events

If you can help us with the set up, or running of the festival, we would love to hear from you. All volunteers are welcome. Help is needed for Friday 20th August for the preparation and set up; and on the day from 9am to 1pm, 1pm to 5pm, 5pm to 10pm, or as long as you can offer. Volunteer help will also be needed on Sunday 22nd August to dismantle and clean up after the event. Please let us know if you can offer any help. All offers are gratefully received.

Stonemason wanted

If you know of a stonemason who can help us replicate the drinking fountain that was used in our park for many years, or if you have a drinking fountain that you no longer use, you could help us with our aim to provide accessible drinking water to all park users. In the meantime we will be providing water from our café income, while we search for a more suitable long term solution. Please contact us, if you can help, or have suggestions to help us fulfil our aim.

Carpenter wanted

We are also looking for volunteer carpenters to help with community projects in Harrow Weald, and for donations of planks of wood.
