Our working groups:
For anyone interested in joining or understanding the groups created by the Friends, an outline is provided here. We hope you might feel inspired to join and to help your local community.
>>> Biodiversity - Group
This group is responsible for the natural wellbeing and all aspects of nature in our park. They undertake general maintenance tasks, planting of bulbs and plants and help to maintain and tidy trees and hedges.
There are often new projects to work on and extra support is always welcome. If you have an interest in gardening, nature and wildlife of all kinds, this group would be especially suitable for you.
>>> Clean Team @ Maintenance Crew
The improved cleanliness of the park has proven to be one of the key issues that people have responded to and it is this group who are mainly responsible for that improvement. Litter picking is undertaken at different times. Some of the group work on a daily or weekly basis and in addition there is the chance to join together once each month on a Sunday morning to ensure that everything is as clean as possible and that any problem areas are identified and dealt with.
It is this group who organise the Sunday Breakfast Not in Bed starting at 10.00am by the Friends’ hut. Bags and litter picking tools can be provided as required.
The Clean Team also help with general maintenance and operate a rota for locking and unlocking the park gates where required.
>>> Healthy Harrow Weald Group
Regular Tia Chi sessions are already held in the park and a group for walkers is due to be created, in addition plans to proceed with Yoga classes, self defence sessions and a cycle group.
>>> Crime or Antisocial
Many people in the local community have an interest in not just the park, but the entire local area. We are all concerned to create and maintain a safe and friendly environment. Members of the Friends’ group with the aim of improving and finding solutions to any antisocial behaviour or crime in the area.
Learning from previous successes, we have helped to improve area's of the park for the better, but there is always more to do. Members of this group take responsibility for liaising with the police and raising awareness amongst the group and the local community concerning any problems.
>>> Event Organisers Group
our first active year many community events have been overseen run and organised by volunteers. This group take responsibility for health and safety and maintaining the documentation required when holding these events.
Volunteers also need to be organised to take part in these events and new events created and planned. On occasion as many as 15 people are needed to run an event and this group will always welcome additional help.
>>> History Harrow Weald
The Harrow Weald park area is steeped in history, and, since forming, the Group has become aware of some interesting information. The site of the tennis courts in the park was once the location of a shed. Our bowling club is over 130 years old.
Silver Close was named after the developer who built most of our houses in the 1930s.
These are just a few snippets of information and there are many more. If you are interested in the history of Harrow Weald and would like to build an online resource for public use, please let us know. If you have any interesting facts about the area or have pictures to share, we would be delighted to see them.
>>> PUGS can attend Jugs, Wugs and Tugs (And what are they)
We have some members who understand the powerful nature of opensource software, and the community nature this area of business creates. Jugs, Wugs and Tugs are user groups set up to share free information and teach each other news skills.
These meetings will be open to all who are interested and are expected to start in July 2019.
>>> Local Businesses Group
Local Businesses and individuals have already provided welcome support, offering their skills and providing much needed financial help.
This has allowed the group to continue with our important work since forming in September 2017. There is much more planned for the future but to achieve this these aims we need to raise funds and to gain further support.
Volunteers in this group will help to communicate with local businesses, to make them aware of our projects and goals. They will also make businesses aware of the free services we offer and the help build and long term mutually beneficial relationship.
This group provide support on administration and help to coordinate schedules, licences, grants and maintain liaison with the council and the public.
The important issues of safety and insurance, ensuring compliance requirements are met and that figures are in order is also part of this group’s remit.
As the Friends Group expands there is a growing need for administration support and volunteers are welcomed.
