Now, here's why it's super special: the Chinese New Year is all about saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new one with lots of joy and good luck. Each year is even named after an animal, like the Year of the Rat, Dragon, or Tiger. It's like having a cool mascot for the whole year!

People get together with their families and friends, and they have big feasts with delicious food. Oh, and there are these fantastic parades with giant dragons and lions that dance through the streets. Can you imagine how much fun that would be?

But wait, there's more! There are also amazing fireworks that light up the sky, making everything look like a magical wonderland. It's like a party that goes on for days, filled with laughter, tasty treats, and good wishes for the upcoming year.

Eid al-Fitr comes at the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and prayer. It's a time for Muslims to celebrate the end of Ramadan, where they've been fasting from sunrise to sunset. Eid al-Adha, on the other hand, is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice. It honours the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham in the Bible) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. However, before he could do so, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. This Eid is a time for Muslims to remember the importance of sacrifice, generosity, and helping others in need.

So, a long, long time ago, there were a group of people called the Israelites, and they were living in a place called Egypt. But, here's the twist: they weren't exactly having the best time there. They were like guests who really wanted to leave a not-so-great hotel.

Now, enter Moses, who was like a superhero for the Israelites. He asked the Pharaoh (who was like the boss of Egypt) to let the Israelites go, but the Pharaoh said no. So, guess what happened? Some magical things occurred – like frogs, locusts, and even parting the sea! It was like a real-life adventure story.

And here's the cool part: when the Israelites finally left Egypt, they didn't have time to bake regular bread. So, they made something called matzah, which is like a kind of flatbread. During Passover, people eat matzah to remember this special time in history.

So, on Vaisakhi morning, everyone wakes up extra early to get ready for the festivities. People put on their best clothes – vibrant colours, sparkling jewellery, and maybe even a fancy turban. It's like dressing up for the biggest celebration of the year!

Then, the real fun begins! There are big parades called Nagar Kirtans, where people march through the streets singing hymns and chanting prayers. It's like a moving concert with a colourful procession of musicians and dancers.

There's music everywhere! Drums beat, trumpets blare, and everyone dances with joy. Once upon a time, in a neighbourhood not too far away, there was a magical night called Halloween. It was the night when the air was filled with giggles and the streets were lined with mysterious characters – ghosts, witches, and friendly monsters.

As the sun set, turning the sky into a canvas of oranges and purples, the houses started to transform. Pumpkins with glowing faces appeared on doorsteps, casting enchanting shadows on the ground. It was like the whole neighbourhood was putting on a costume party!

Now, the story of Halloween goes like this: On this special night, the veil between our world and the magical world becomes really thin. That means all sorts of fantastical creatures can visit our neighbourhoods! But here's the trick – they're not here to scare us; they're here for treats!

Kids, armed with buckets and bags, dress up in the most creative costumes. Some become superheroes, others turn into animals, and a few might even become their favourite characters from fairytales.

They go from house to house, knocking on doors and chanting a magical phrase: "Trick or treat!" The kind neighbours, who are in on the enchantment, fill their bags with delicious candies and sweets. It's a bit like a treasure hunt, but with treats instead of gold!

And oh, the houses themselves join in the fun. Cobwebs, skeletons, and friendly ghosts decorate lawns, creating a spooky-but-not-too-spooky atmosphere. Some houses even turn into haunted mansions for the night, welcoming brave trick-or-treaters to step inside for a thrill.

As the night goes on, the moon shines a little brighter, and laughter echoes through the streets. It's a night filled with not-so-scary surprises, where magic and imagination rule. And when the clock strikes midnight, the enchantment fades, leaving behind memories of a Halloween adventure like no other.

Chanukah is a special celebration for Jewish families. It's like a bright and cheerful festival filled with fun and joy.

Now, let me tell you why Chanukah happens. Chanukah is a Jewish festival that lasts for eight nights. It commemorates a historical event that took place over 2,000 years ago when a group of Jewish people called the Maccabees fought for their freedom. They reclaimed their temple in Jerusalem from rulers who wouldn't let them practice their religion. When they rededicated the temple, there was only enough oil to light the special lamp, called the menorah, for one day. But guess what? A miracle happened, and the oil lasted for eight days! That's why Chanukah lasts for eight nights, and it's a time to celebrate miracles and freedom.

Now, about the food! During Chanukah, people enjoy delicious treats like "latkes" and "sufganiyot." Latkes are crispy potato pancakes, and sufganiyot are jelly-filled doughnuts. Yum! These tasty treats remind people of the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days.

And let's talk about traditions! One important tradition is lighting the menorah. It has nine candles - one for each night and an extra one called the "shamash" that is used to light the others. Families light one candle each night until all eight are lit. It's a beautiful way to remember the miracle of the oil.

People also play a fun game with a spinning top called a "dreidel." It has four sides, each with a different Hebrew letter. Players use it to win chocolate coins called "gelt" in a game of chance.

So, Chanukah is a time for celebrating freedom, miracles, and spending time with family. It's a festival of lights, delicious treats, and fun traditions!

On 11th May 2019 an exciting art event, Art for Park’s Sake, took place in Harrow Weald Recreation Ground (known locally as Boxtree Park).

On 11th May 2019 an exciting art event, Art for Park’s Sake, took place in Harrow Weald Recreation Ground (known locally as Boxtree Park).

Among the activities taking place, the local community were welcomed to add their own touches to some well-known paintings, which were outlined on the canvases by several local artists.

Cheryl Gould, the President of Harrow Arts Society, was in attendance and commented: “We encourage people to have a go and paint, whether it is something they have tried before or not. It can help children and young people and is so much fun”.

The result of the community’s efforts is what you can now see hanging here in the Parklife Café. It certainly was fun and produced some lovely artwork which we hope you will enjoy.
